A CULTURE OF CARE
Hair kept with
patience and dignity.
Across Anatolia, hair has long carried an intimate relationship with identity, care and personal dignity. Cleansing, careful combing, protective braiding and patient maintenance were not passing beauty rituals; they were practices shared through generations.
The bathing and grooming traditions that travelled through Ottoman Anatolia placed water, cleanliness and attentive preparation at the centre of personal care. Within the imperial household, the presentation of court women and young princes belonged to a wider discipline of grooming, dress and ceremony; women’s hair in particular was recorded in abundant braids, enriched with pearls, ribbons and flowers.
In 1717, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu carried this story from Ottoman court circles back to London in her letters, admiring the health and abundance of Turkish women’s hair. Anatolie creates a contemporary bridge in the opposite direction: corporate house and private client direction in London; atelier, sourcing and documented origin in Mersin.
